Being rich in colour, the green reveals its high iron and chlorophyll content, being also high in the minerals calcium, magnesium, silicon, sulphur, copper, chromium, zinc, cobalt, potassium and phosphorus. Nettles also contain high amounts of vitamins A, C, D, E, and K as well as riboflavin and thiamine.

The young plants used to be used as a spring tonic in the treatment of scurvy and in spring as a vegetable, i.e. similar to the use of spinach today with the taste being far milder. Nettles also used to be added to the horses diet following their digestive problems. Egg production increased by adding nettles to poultry food and it warded off flies by hanging a fresh bunch of nettles in the larder.

With its valued antiseptic and astringent properties, the dried, pulverised herb stops nosebleeds when sniffed. A strong infusion with the herb is used to improve heart action as well as improving headaches, internal bleeding, especially after childbirth.

Being specifically for the kidneys and being useful in expelling gravel from the bladder as well as dissolving kidney stones, nettles are also a very powerful blood purifier, eliminating toxins and metabolic wastes by stimulating the kidneys to excrete more water, cleaning the whole intestinal tract while activating the body’s natural defence mechanisms. Intestinal worms are also killed and expelled. Helpful in the treatment of dysentery, diarrhea, haemorrhoids and inflammation of the kidneys is a strong infusion of the brew. Since it helps expel phlegm from the lungs, it is also very useful in the treatment of asthma.

Nettle tea is also recommended as a long-term stimulation therapy for allergies, people with poor complexions as well as an additional discharging therapy in connection with all types of rheumatism and gout.

There have also been several cases of hay fever, where it has been known to be cured by drinking nettle tea every day from November through to April, that is just before the pollen season begins.

Having a diuretic effect you will urinate more frequently and the urine tends to be of a darker colour and may smell stronger during the first few days of drinking the tea.

Parting thoughts:

Nothing can compare the sting of the nettle to the pain it heals. The entire plant, stems, leaves, flowers and roots have powerful medicinal properties and its miraculous healing properties are well known.
