Riboflavin is also known as Vitamin B2. It is an easily absorbed micronutrient. You need it in your diet every day, as it is water-soluble and can’t be stored in the body. It is passed out during urination.

Vitamin B2 is needed for a wide variety of cellular processes and has a number of important functions. It plays a key role in energy metabolism, being required for the metabolism of fats, proteins as well as carbohydrates. Riboflavin helps in keeping the skin and eyes, the nervous system as well as mucous membranes healthy. It helps in the production of steroids and red blood cells as well as supporting the body absorb iron from the foods that we eat.

By eating a varied, healthy and balanced diet, you should be able to get all of the Riboflavin you need.

Some good sources of Vitamin B2 include:

Milk, cheese, leafy green vegetables, legumes, yeast, almonds, eggs, rice, mushrooms, breakfast cereals, pasta, sauces, fruit drinks and enriched vitamin milk products.

Exposure to light will destroy riboflavin. It is non-toxic when taken orally. Its low solubility keeps it from being absorbed from the gut in dangerous quantities.

Riboflavin is yellow or orange-yellow in colour. It is being used as a food colouring as well as used to fortify certain foods.
