Psychology of Colour | Restore Your Equilibrium

Psychology of Colour | Restore Your Equilibrium

By Viola Woolcott

Colour therapy is an important method of treatment. Through its very own evolution the human body is intimately keyed to colour. Each colour consists of a distinctive vibration which influences us. Every colour in the spectrum vibrates at its own speed. These vibrations correspond with your body’s inner vibration and cause all parts of the body to react to a different colour.

It has also been known that colour has an affect on your personality, that may be because of cultural conditioning or maybe even through your very own initial experience you have had with a particular colour. For example, you may have had a happy event sometimes in the past when you were wearing the colour green and now it may trigger off the memory of special happenings.

To harmonise our vibration and to gain back our equilibrium during illness or troubled times, we can use the appropriate colour, as there are psychological associations with each different colour. Colours can be linked to our moods.

>> The reds, oranges and yellows are expansive, they are warm. They give you feelings of energy… excitement… joy.

>> The blues, indigos and also the purples are cooler colours, but they are very calming. They induce relaxation as well as quieten the temperament.

>> Green is the colour of the heart. The colour of harmony. It is a stabiliser.

>> At the heart of the colour black you find discipline. Black is liberating… creative… idealistic… secretly wealthy… Black can complete the incomplete.

>> White contains equal amounts of all colours and it does not distinguish one organ from another. White is truthful… comprehensive… unspoiled… kind… unsullied… harmonious… white conjures hope.

>> Gold means purity… maturity… enlightenment… achieving… abundant… lenient… Gold has knowledge to self, it does not seek, as it has already found.

>> Silver is impartial… flowing… contemplative… revealing… clever and perceptive… it reflects like a mirror. It is said that an invisible cord attaches us to the other side. Silver is a natural emotional tranquiliser… it lights up your path.

>> Single-minded and looking to itself first is turquoise. It rather says what it feels no matter if it is appropriate. Turquoise is calm… self-possessed… introspective… self-reliant… to restore peace within yourself walk into a turquoise sea… to heal affairs of the heart, wear turquoise jewellery.

>> At its best grey is optimistic. It is not really a colour to be used in healing, even though light grey sometimes is. When grey appears it normally means some kind of breakdown. Grey is the connection between black and white, where it is said that ignorance and innocence get together. Grey is sane… authentic… reputable… well-versed… of strong character… Helpful… breaks free the chains that bind.

It is a fact than when we are well most like all colours. Suffering with emotional or even physical illness may bring out preferences for particular colours or tones. What happens quite often is that we are naturally drawn to particular colours or colour schemes that we need for healing.

There is no reason why you can’t learn the psychology of colour. It is the same than learning a new language, or the alphabet in order to be able to read. By understanding the basic meaning, you learn how to interpret what the colours are telling you about what it is that you need. What is your favourite colour?

  1. I couldn’t agree more. Learning the ‘language of colour’ should be a must for everyone. Understanding yourself through the language of colour is so helpful when you are on a journey of personal growth and self improvement.

  2. Hi Leanne – I think that more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of colour and the positive ‘effects’. Personally I am very drawn to particular colours at certain times.

I looked at your website. Very nice. Thank you!

  3. Hi Viola,
Sorry it has taken a bit to get back…still on the steep learning curve re blogs etc! We are all drawn to certain colours at certain times as a deeper part of ourselves communicates our needs to us this way. Learning the language of colour would have to be one of the most helpful tools for self understanding that we could possibly use.!
Thanks for the feedback on the website! This is just the start with changes in progress.
    Have a colour-full day.

  4. Hi Leanne – nice to hear from you again.

I know what you mean about colours. I am very visual and I feel drawn to ALL colours. I have no preference, neiter do I dislike any colour. So I consider myself lucky! :-)

I know there is a lot to learn about blogging and there are always changes to be made. Keep up the good work and enjoy, :-)

  5. Hi Viola,
I am drawn to all colours and also have no strong dislikes! But I do notice a definite leaning at times towards one colour over others. I know then that my higher self is calling on the energies of that colour to work on something I need to deal with.

I am also very visual…I see everything as a colour. Colour is my second language!! lol

Thanks for the encouragement too .

  6. Hi Leanne – I think that we are both lucky as we feel drawn to them all :-) I must say, that thinking about it, I have had days where a particular colour made all the difference :-)

  7. Hi Viola,
My current favourites are really leaning towards the golds. A lot of people around me are also’going for the gold’ so to speak. I am an Aura Soma practitioner and lecturer in Colour Therapy (when I am not playing with fabrics and dyes!!!) and it seems that more and more people are choosing gold now…Maybe we are entering the ‘Golden Age” and humanity is moving towards self actualisation and coming from their own power/strengths. I hope so!
    Have a rainbow filled day

  8. Ooops forgot to include this link to an article that was recently in the Sydney paper.

I thought it was great and shows that times may be changing!

  9. Hi there Leanne – that’s quite interesting you mentioning the colour ‘gold’. I have had quite a few e-mails of readers saying they are drawn to gold at the moment.

Among some other courses and workshop I have also done the Aura Soma one and the coloured bottle I chose was blue & green. I do like them together.

When I am at home I wear white mostly. Yesterday I wore a lot of green and my partner commented on how radiant I looked. My eyes are green-blue and when I wear green, it makes my eyes look really green and the blue kind of ‘disappears’. I guess that makes it more of ‘my’ colour ;-)

Thanks for including the link http://www.smh.com.au/news/house–home/our-everchanging-hues/2008/02/14/1202760491029.html it’s a great article and like you, I think that times are changing.

  10. Hi Viola,
It’s lovely to find a kindred colour spirit! It’s great when we find the colour that goes zing for us. I often receive great comments when I wear blue or turquoise (blue eyes).
It sounds like you might be a ‘heart bottle’ lady. It is a lovely combination. Do you remember the old saying…’blue and green should never be seen except when they are in the washing machine… What a load of rubbish. They are a delight when in combination.
I tend to favour bottle 95 which is the magenta over gold. I have just done some lovely scarves in that combination and it truly was ‘colour therapy’ for me as I worked with them.
    Bye for now

  11. Hi Leanne – Funny, but you mentioning turquoise reminds me of a vision I have had during Shamanic work. I was shown a shape (diamond) and it was turquoise with yellowish/golden light coming off it in all directions. It has a big meaning to me.

You have been tempting me to think a little deeper and since you left a comment I realise even more that colour is MOST important to me. Thank you :-)

Even though I am German, I do KNOW the saying about Green and Blue. When I was little I was always told, “you do NOT green and blue”…..? YES, as you say, what a LOAD of rubbish. I never understood and I never listened and I even wore green and blue striped sweat-shirts :-) , wore green and blue make-up together and also decorated my room in those colours….and I still feel drawn to them when I see them together…..

    Viola

  12. Hi Viola,
That’s interesting that the saying about blue and green was in the German culture as well. I wonder where it originally came from and why?
You know it all links in..when I think about your turquoise vision during Shamanic work and your being drawn to blue and green…well blue and green together make turquoise don’t they?
Your vision also brings to mind the Aura Soma bottle #83 which is the turquoise /gold combination… called ‘Open Sesame” I love that bottle and have worked with it myself. Communicating your inner wisdom and self from the heart to large groups…Finding the magic to unlock the doors… When you know who you really are you can let your true light shine….Ohhh lovely stuff…
