Positive Thoughts, Food for the Mind
Positive Thoughts, Food for the Mind
By Viola Woolcott
When we are bothered by problems, when nothing seems to help, when we feel as if we are lost in the dark abyss, there is a way out by handling the problems skilfully. Problems enrich life as much as success and happiness. Philosophers, Saints as well as achievers all agree on that. The importance lays in emphasising not to let them intimidate you. Problems are challenges. They can be used to develop the skill to empower the Self. They are there to help you “grow”.
It is our habit to ignore problems, to push them away, as they seem to be to great to overcome. We forget that they will reappear, possibly in a greater and far more destructive form. The first step to dealing with a problem is clearly to identify it. Identifying, acknowledging and accepting it in the right spirit is absolutely necessary to the process of healing. Evidently some problems are unimportant where others need to be addressed and faced totally. Each problem will appear easier to handle when we are determined as well as committed in solving it. It is very likely that the once we thought permanent and seemingly impossible to solve may disappear.
Try to understand the problem. Try finding the source. Sit comfortably in a quiet place, where you have the least distractions. Relax your body as well as your mind. Breathe deeply. Let go of all your worries on the out breath and feel peaceful, clear as well as spacious. Be with that peace for a while. See and feel the problem you are facing. Recognise and acknowledge its presence. Go back in time and try to remember how the problem may have begun. The source, the place, maybe the colour, temperature, shape and the location of the place. Your healing begins as you contemplate the causes and as you are feeling them.
Objectively look at your problems and don’t pre-label them as negative. Don’t deny your emotions while you are healing. Feelings can be released when they come to the surface. Naturally and without holding on, hiding or even defending the pain express your feelings. Physical pressure as well as chemical toxins build up when we hold back, so if there is emotional pain, it is good to cry as it releases mental stress. Emotions need to be allowed their natural space to heal.
Perceptions can be changed. Constantly seeing a problem as negative, thinking, dwelling upon a situation and talking about its severity will make you suffer. It will even make small hurdles seem to great to overcome. Make a determined effort not to dwell on problems as negative. Take your mind off things by maybe reading, drawing or gardening. Very often they become the anchors that will see you through your problems.
Avoid conflict with others. Generate strong positive energy, as it helps and eases pain as well as distress. Relax, stop holding on, take better care of yourself and identify your true needs. Remember to be gentle with yourself.
Positive thoughts become food for the mind, negative thoughts have toxic effects. Clear your mind of intellectual as well as emotional worthless garbage, which you have collected during your life. Provide space for true relaxation and enjoyment.
