Future of Food

Over 12,000 years ago, people began planting and saving seeds, agriculture flowered and civilisations were born. In china 1000’s of variety of rice were grown, over 5,000 types of potato were cultivated world wide, and in the USA alone more than 7000 varieties of apple were grown in the 19th Century, to name but a few food.

Role on the 20th Century, and the face of farming underwent a radical change. The manufacture of nitrogen based bombs used during WWI led to the development of nitrogen based fertilisers.

Nerve gas developed during WWII was slightly modified to make insecticides and DDT became the hero of its generation.

Higher yields and increased food production were promised by new technologies, as well as cheaper prices and greater availability.

By the mid 20th century, along with new developments in plant breeding, this led to the ‘green revolution’. Maybe the people who first imagined the ‘green revolution had good hearts. What do you think? Watch this video and decide for yourself.
