Fennel

Since the time of the Egyptians fennel has been used to treat ailments of the digestive system. Studies support the traditional use as a digestive aid to relieve intestinal spasms and cramping of the digestive tract and the smooth muscle lining, which can relieve uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms such as digestive upsets, including indigestion, gas pains, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) as well as infant colic’s.

As fennel has antispasmodic effects, it may help to relax other smooth muscles in the body including the uterus.

Fennel acts as a phytoestrogen in the body, therefore simulating the effects of estrogen in the system. Traditionally it has been used to stimulate menstruation and in nursing mothers milk production. Maybe this is why the herb has been used for treatments associated with hormone imbalance in women i.e. PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menopause as well as low milk production and low libido.

Fennel seeds are very rich in minerals including magnesium. In many combination formulas the herb is used as an active ingredient to balance hormones in menopausal and premenstrual women.

Being used as a decongestant, fennel is said to ease loosen phlegm in the bronchial passages and exerts a calming influence on the bronchial tissues. The herb is also used for coughs and colds.

Also having a reputation as an appetite suppressant, fennel is a promoter of weight-loss. Research shows that fennel contributes in the reduction of water retention, as it has some diuretic effects.

Preparing an eyewash from the decoction of the crushed seeds is said to reduce irritation and eye strain as well as improving eyesight. Try applying it in the form of a compress (wet tea bag). Place them on your closed eyes to alleviate redness and swelling.

The fresh liquorice taste is a welcome addition to any wellness plan.

Parting Thoughts:
