Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde | Alcohol, the Mood Enhancer

Posted by Viola Woolcott

I’m really not one for going out to pubs, clubs or bars anymore, but last night I went out with a friend. By the time I made up my mind to join her, it was 9pm and by the time we got into town it was almost 10pm. I would have thought it’s a good time to get to a Bar, but as a non-drinker, to me there is never really the right time. As I hardly go out, I totally forgot that at that time most people are already on ‘another’ planet.

It’s been almost 2 years now since I haven’t had any alcohol and needless to say, to watch how people behave after a few to many, makes me think it was a well worth decision. Alcohol initially acts as a ‘pick-you-up’. But, it’s addictive. It’s a drug, a mood enhancer, a depressant - and you see some people turn from Jekyll to Hyde. Quite sad really what alcohol can do to you if you let it control you.

So what’s your views on this? Any experiences you like to share? We’d be interested in hearing about it.

  1. As a scientist, I have to say that Alcohol is THE most dangerous drug for the human body, if you sum its physiological, sociological and psychological effects, and cigarettes/tobacco are not far behind (Nicotine being pharmacologically THE most addictive drug).
Alcohol is also extremely addictive and a hypnotic depressant drug (Ethanol), i.e. it alters the way we think (overall in a negative manner). Alcohol is also THE second most fattening foostuff (Calories but not food :) after pure lard.
The fact that is legal says more about those in power than the mass of the ignorami that devote their leisure time to detroying themselves with it doesn’t it? (The British fought a war with the Chinese over their ‘Right’ to sell to and keep the Chinese population addicted to Opium… Bless :)

  2. I do agree David.

Worst is that most think that whatever is sold on the shop shelves is ‘good’ for you. Government orders. And of course, if we do get ill, we need the pharmaceuticals. That keeps the government and the pharma in business….. Recently someone working for the government said to me that they are working from one pocket into another… and that is in their OWN pocket.

Alcohol is very unhealthy. It’s a killer . And people have also killed during their drunken haze….. And no, there are NO two sides to the story. Alcohol is a NO NO!!!!

  3. Amazing how the most damaging substance is ubiquitous in our society, in advertising, at parties…everywhere. Alcohol is a poison, and affects anyone who uses it in some destructive way.
Some people are “highly functioning” alcoholics and basically get through life not causing huge damage except to themselves. Others, it is as if Mr.Hyde is just waiting underneath the surface to pop out and live. Mr. Hyde in an alcoholic, is extremely clever at “hyding” the fact that he is drinking at all. But eventually he slips up and the writing is on the wall. By Mr. Hyde can go on for sometime wreaking major destruction in his path and get away with it. He gets great at lying…so much so, he believes his own lies. Many people are diagnosed with all sorts of personality disorders, yet it is the alcohol that truly feeds these disorders. We start to wonder, “is it the alcohol or the disorder?” when it is really a blurring of both.
Alcohol causes people to do things they never remember the next day, and though caught, continue to cry innocent because of blackout or memory loss. Split personality?Memory loss?
Yes, and you can thank the alcohol.
Oh, then there is the sickness in many of “being bad” ,so they can be good, later on. If that is not the sickness of Jeckyl and Hyde, or split personality, what is?Alcohol is a great inducer of these syndromes.

  4. I also think alcoholism is a very deep personality disorder.
Alcohol has devastating influence to society as it is not sanctioned, but actually promoted. It lives through Brands that are related to luxury, thus being the object of desire of the masses. It is interesting also that historical and cultural background of alcohol role in primitive societies is being used for creating myths about it (like vine)…
