Chemicals are being absorbed by our Body Fat and Major Organs

By Viola Woolcott

Research into toxic chemicals in house dust reveal widespread presence in homes across the UK and those are not those coming from traffic fumes or factory chimneys. They are the unseen and very often unlabelled chemical additives we bring into our homes inside everyday products like televisions, carpets, toiletries AND toys.

It has been recognised that the majority of chemicals in house dust comes from the use in homes of the consumer goods. Regardless of some producers ‘claims‘, that their chemicals that are bound into their products are at NO risk to anyone. We ingest, we breathe in ANY dust and ANY chemicals that are present in food as well as teething toys or we even absorb it directly through the skin.

Widespread chemical contamination is in our homes, offices, in our every day lives, not just in our outside world. We expect chemical pollution to find its way into our homes from busy roads, dirty factories, but do we expect the unseen poisons from every day products like toys and televisions to be escaping into our bedrooms? Our living rooms? Our kitchens? They can contaminate our body tissue and that of our unborn babies.

My findings:

=> Hormone disrupting akylphenols (used mainly to soften PVC), also used in cosmetics and other personal care products.
=> Paraffin’s which are chlorinated and may cause cancer. Used in plastics, paints as well as rubbers.
=> Phthalate esters used mainly to soften PVC, which is a chemical compound used as plastic softener. Also in many toiletries. Reported to be a potential cause of reproductive or developmental problems because it mimics a natural hormone.
=> Used as fire retardants - brominated chemicals which disrupt hormones.

Looking in detail at the human body, the above chemical findings are being absorbed by our body fat and major organs from the use of every day products as well as the environment. After establishing their presence, they are the same once found in house dust.

To safeguard our health, it is clear to me that urgent action is needed to eliminate these toxic chemicals from the goods we use. We have an obligation to replace these chemicals of concern wherever a safer alternative exists.
